AT THE BEGINNING
The 3 Cups of Kopi Playback Theatre Ensemble (3 Cups) emerged from a passionate
group of enthusiasts—graduates of Tapestry Playback Theatre's Core Training in late 2016.
Our diverse circle includes office workers, educators, undergraduates, arts freelancers, parents, and business owners.
We've gathered regularly in Singapore, creating safe spaces for anyone with a story to share.
As a community arts collective, we believe playback theatre fosters bonding, healing,
reflection, and inspiration through the resonance of shared emotions.
ALONG THE WAY
Between 2017 and 2018, we celebrated key milestones: our debut performance, inaugural retreat, and first playback jam.
In 2020, members co-organized the inaugural Singapore Playback Theatre Gathering alongside
mentors and friends from other local Playback Theatre groups.
We became Singapore's first playback group to sustain regular online meetings and virtual performances
throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This pivot allowed us to refine online presentation techniques,
connect with new local and international audiences, and welcome potential members.
We were pioneered and experimented with hybrid formats—blending Zoom and in-person experiences.
#ZoomBack delved into the fusion of technical, technological, physical, and virtual possibilities.
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
In early 2022, 3 Cups launched KOPI STORIES. a dynamic crash course in playback theatre essentials to spark interest across Singapore.
In late 2023, KOPI KAKIS—formed by friends from Long Time No See, iMi, and 3 Cups—brought
History As We Know It to audiences in Singapore and South Africa.
We witnessed powerful stories exploring identity, family, home, migration, and geopolitics.
Over the past few years, we've deepened partnerships with St Luke's Eldercare, the Singapore Drama Educators Association,
Singapore Improv Fest, SingHealth, and an expanded KOPI KAKIS, among others.
We eagerly anticipate connecting with practitioners and newcomers from all walks of life, sharing meaningful moments together.
